Facial Pain and Trigeminal Neuralgia

Facial Pain and Trigeminal Neuralgia

At Pillars Acupuncture we have great success with reducing pain associated with Trigeminal Neuralgia or any type of facial pain and  numbness issues.

Trigeminal Neuralgia can be effectively treated with Acupuncture. It is a disorder of the sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve producing shocking severe pain or numbness along one or more of the divisions of the trigeminal nerve. Usually on one side of the face and felt along the side of the jaw, jaw area, cheeks and lips.  According to Western medicine, trigeminal neuralgia’s etiology is unknown and usually effects older patients.

Chinese medicine characterizes Trigeminal Neuralgia as pain caused by external invasion of cold, wind, or heat that attack the face causing a blockage of qi and blood.  Whenever there is a blockage there is impaired blood flow to the nerves and tissue of the face causing pain.

Acupuncture helps with facial pain relief by removing these blockages by activating acupoints related to the effected areas of the face.  This activation helps to bring in more qi and blood and thus, reducing facial pain and numbness.

We also recommend protecting your face from exposure to cold wind from being outside in winter or under the AC vent in the office as well as extreme heat in summer.
